I have an retirement entitlement dispute with a previous employer. Though not an attorney, I've good experience in commercial contracts and so on and have picked up comfort with reading the law. So rather than going for someone elses paraphrase (sort of ERISA for dummies), I went for a book that has the actual law and regulation. This is THE treasure trove. It requires more patience and time. One section may refer to another section, and then that section sets out exclusions requiring further effort. Then rapidly you realize that the legal words are rather general and ambiguous. Here is where the internet is great. Google around the specific words and/or the section number and you get to extensive articles by attorneys and law professors that give you every relevant case and advice. This way I found that ERISA is like other technical areas such as medicine, tax and so on - all are immensely complicated BUT if you have a particular disease or a particular issue, a surprisingly small amount of information is centrally relevant - you do not need to know every city in your state to be an expert in the geography of the one you live in. You end up knowing more about your problem than even your attorney (or internist for that matter!). Finally, there is a two step process you can use. While ERISA and case law do change, it is only in the detail. You can buy an old version cheap (I went for the 2009 edition). This will get you started. If it works for you I suggest investing in the 2014 edition unless you want your killer point to be answered with "that was true, but in 2012!!). The 2014 version also does cover some areas not in previous editions. Look at it this way. The 2014 edition costs less than half an hour of attorney time, and you will save much more than that by being able to use his/her time intelligently.Product details
