This collection contains two shorts stories, “Victory” and “Ignorant,” with motherhood playing a key role in both. “Victory,” is a story of the lengths a child will go to satisfy basic needs. “Ignorant” is a story of the power of tragedy to reconcile, but oftentimes too late. “In “Victory”, a homeless child named Alex meets a strange older woman on the street. For reasons he cannot fathom, she invites him to a feast at a fancy restaurant. Alex lets his hunger get the best of him and accepts her offer. How much is Alex willing to give up for a simple meal? In “Ignorant,” Olga's father dies unexpectedly, so she feels compelled to visit her aging mother despite their bad history. Olga ignores the storm brewing overhead, never imagining that another tragedy could quickly befall her.

"For Mother: A Short Story Collection of Two" by N. Primak consists of two contemporary fictional shorts, both with a theme related to a mother... no surprise there, it's all in the title. Both stories were quite good, I thought. First was called Victory, in which a runaway beggar boy, freezing on a Canadian street corner in winter, was approached by a wealthy looking lady who stopped and asked his name. When he replied, her face lit up and she took him somewhere for new clothes, then out to a fancy meal. He began to suspect she was a few donuts shy of a dozen, but he hadn't eaten in more than three days, so he went along with her. But she wanted something. She MUST have wanted something. Who was she? Who did she think HE was? It all comes clear in the end.

The second story is called Ignorant, in which a young woman is walking to her mother's house during a driving rainstorm. Her father had just died, and the young woman had broken all contact with her parents when she married against their will. But it was time to make amends with her mother. She was torn with grief over the fact that she hadn't talked to her father for years, and now she would never again have the chance; she didn't want that to happen with her mother. But the storm was so intense, and her clothes were not warm. Lightning struck all around her. She could see her mother's porch light, just ahead. How would she be received? Her mother did not know she was coming; would she even let her in the house? Would she forgive her?

I really enjoyed both these stories. They both had a very interesting and thought-provoking twist at the end. They make for a quick read, and would be perfect to have on hand while waiting for a doctor appointment, or standing in line at the bank. I recommend the book; I honestly think just about everybody would enjoy reading it. I'm personally very glad that I decided to download it, and you will be, too.

For Mother A Short Story Collection of Two eBook N Primak Reviews

In two powerful short stories, N. Primak shines an unsentimental light on the sacred cow of motherhood and examines the less cozy aspects of mother-child relationships. Beginning with a chance encounter on a sidewalk, "Victory" leads us through the complicated choreography of demands, concessions and compromise that forms the foundation of human partnerships. "Ignorant" is a moving story about estrangement and reconciliation. When long-standing family disagreements and bitterness are weighed against a recent tragedy, which emotions will prevail?

These stories are beautifully crafted; the writer doles out just enough detail about the situations and characters to keep us reading and wanting more. "Ignorance" ended a bit too abruptly for me, but I recognize this is a matter of personal preference. I look forward to more offerings from this talented author.
This is a "collection" of two stories. Both seemed to be written for emotional impact, the characterization seemed lacking and the word choice was often awkward. I did not enjoy.
Very disappointed, I was expecting stories that were warm and uplifting, these were not. Very cold, abrupt stories, I found both stories to be depressing.
I expected both of these stories to be sweet, heartwarming stories that would put any Hallmark card to shame. I was wrong. Neither story is particularly cold, but they both focus more on making the reader think rather than feel good.

The first story deals more with a moralistic dilemma while story two goes more for the emotional impact. They're both very short yet well written and developed nearly perfectly. The characterization is excellent, the plot moves along smoothly, and there are no obvious typos to be found! These short stories are superior to most.

My only critiques are that I wish the second story didn't end on a cliffhanger and that the first story had more of an intro. Otherwise, everything about both of these stories was amazing. I would definitely recommend this download to anyone who enjoys reading well written short stories.
The first of these two short stories by N. Primak is "Victory." A homeless boy is standing on the street when a woman, somewhere around age 50, walks by, but stops when she sees him. He reminds her of someone, and when she hears that his name is Alex, she stops to talk to him. The next thing that Alex knows is that he is dressed up and going to a very nice restaurant with this lady, and Alex is so hungry since he hasn't eaten in three days.

When Alex and this very demanding woman are seated, the woman reprimands Alex for every little thing that she thinks he is not doing correctly, but Alex is starving and only wants food. The contrast between what she expects of this child from the streets and what Alex wants from her becomes so frustrating that the woman breaks down in tears. From this point on in "Victory" the truth is revealed about this woman from Montreal and the boy named Alex from the streets. It becomes a testimony for what lengths mothers and children will go for each other. There is a note of redemption in this story for each of the characters as their walls and boundaries are broken down to each other. It is a very good story.

"Ignorant" starts with a sense of urgency, and that urgency remains in place throughout the story as Olga hurries on her way through a bad storm for only a few blocks to see her estranged mother. Olga's father has died, and Olga hasn't seen or spoken to them for quite a long time because her mother disapproved of her choice of a man to marry. The thoughts going through her head are rushing as she is rushing to get to her mother's house to say how sorry she is, even though she can't tell her father now that it's too late.

Olga remembers the comforts of home, even though they are not elaborate or indicative of wealth the comfort of the old recliner with stuffing coming out of it, the cat Penny and the soft light of a rusty old lamp, her mother's porch light. The comforts of home do not have to be pristine. The rain is coming down as Olga rushes on in the dark, and the an icy chill went through her. Another icy chill will affect her later on.

For such a short story, I think this one is remarkable. There are so many themes and symbols, and the use of words tie so many of them together. The title says it all when we think about how little we know about what goes on right in our own little communities.

There is a lot to like about this story.
